The Market Shops to Host Second July OneBlood Drive

The Market Shops will host an additional OneBlood Drive on Friday, July 31 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The new drive was created after the great success from The Market Shops’ blood drive previously held on July 3, which garnered 18 pints of blood.

All donors will receive a complimentary COVID-19 Antibody Test in addition to the regularly administered wellness checkup consisting of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and iron count, including cholesterol screening. Those planning to donate can schedule an appointment ahead of time by visiting https://donor.oneblood.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/975288.

The antibody test is authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and will indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to the virus, regardless of whether they ever showed symptoms. Donors will be able to see their results approximately 48 hours after donating by logging into their donor portal at www.oneblood.org.

Donors will also receive a complimentary OneBlood tote bag along with exclusive discounts from The Market Shops merchants including a free mini iced cinnamon biscuit from Maple Street Biscuit Company, a kid’s scoop of ice cream from Ben and Jerry’s, 10 percent off a purchase at Clean Juice, 10 percent off a purchase at Jon Smith Subs, and 25 percent off a purchase at Pizza by the Sea.

OneBlood is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) community asset responsible for providing safe, available and affordable blood. Generally healthy people ages 16 or older who weigh at least 110 pounds and have a valid photo ID can donate blood.

One in three people will need blood in their lifetime. Blood that is donated on July 31 will likely be transfused within two to three days. The turn-around is that fast, the need is constant. Many potential blood donors believe that they cannot donate blood due to medical or other reasons. If you are curious if you are a candidate for donation or to learn more about the importance of blood donation and how donors can target the power of their blood type, visit oneblood.org.

The Market Shops 5th Annual Bloody Mary Festival Raises $25,000 for Habitat for Humanity – Walton County, FL

The Market Shops, located at the entrance to Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, hosted the 5th Annual Bloody Mary Festival on November 2, 2019. The annual event, recently named “Best Local Event” by the readers of Emerald Coast Magazine, raised $25,000 for Habitat for Humanity – Walton County, a record-breaking amount for the festival. The sold-out event featured unlimited tastes of the Emerald Coast’s most creative and inventive Bloody Marys made with Cathead Vodka and served by the finest restaurants and bars on the Panhandle.

Guests were greeted upon arrival with festive tomato-themed balloon décor, courtesy of Mingle, before entering the bustling courtyard and grand lawn, each full of restaurants, vendors, and merchants from The Market Shops. Event goers made their way around the tents sampling each Bloody Mary complete with over-the-top accoutrements in specialty cups provided by Compass Builders of Florida and Visit South Walton.

Upon check-in, guests received a token in order to vote for the coveted People’s Choice Awards for the “Best Bloody Mary in South Walton.” At the end of the event, these votes were counted by Hill Coleman CPA and the following local restaurants were chosen as the winners:

1st Place People’s Choice Award – Rockin Tacos Grill & Tequila Bar

Beefy fajita-style Bloody Mary made with jalapeno-infused Cathead vodka, garnished with a chicken and cheese taco, spicy green bean, pickled jalapeño, fresh lime, and a bonus Rockin Tacos’ La Casa Margarita sidecar.

2nd Place People’s Choice Award – The Surf Hut

Infused Cathead vodka mixed with tomato juice, Frank’s Red Hot, horseradish, Worcestershire, fresh-squeezed limes and lemons, spicy green bean juice, celery seed, garlic, sea salt and pepper. Garnished with an Old Bay seasoning rim, stuffed olive, spicy green bean, cheddar cheese cube, jalapeño, and a freshly baked, hand-rolled cream cheese crab ball.

3rd Place People’s Choice Award – Jackacuda’s Seafood and Sushi

Signature house-made Bloody Mary with a spiced rim and topped with Jackacuda’s Nola sushi roll, a dynamite shrimp and an Asian zing boneless chicken wing.

A panel of select food critics and local celebrities also judged each Bloody Mary and selected the following winner as the most delicious and most creative:
